remembering desiderata

I went walking with a friend today who I used to teach with but since then have both taken a "pause" to have our own kids. She mentioned as part of a conversation that her and her husband had paid off their mortgage last year. I was like "WHAT? You're only 30. I don't know any 30 year olds that are mortgage free. " I have been thinking about it all the way home and comparing our situation with others I know. It has consumed me for the last few hours. Suddenly my life didn't feel as accomplished as I thought it was, how did we get so behind I thought. Perhaps I should be going back to full time work this year, getting myself all in a panic about finding a daycare for Oliver and getting my C.V up to scratch I remembered desiderata.... Go placidly amidst the nose and haste, and remember what peace there may in silence... . If you compare yourself with others, you may become bitter or vain, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

It was a timely reminder and as I did take a moment to reflect,  I was shocked at how quickly my favourite idol of materialism had dominated my thoughts yet again. Lord help me remember your teachings and keep my focus not on this fleeting world but on what matters.
Matthew 6:19-2119 x“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where ymoth and rust5destroy and where thieves zbreak in and steal, 20 xbut lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
